The appointment of Dr Adenike Ogunshe, a senior lecturer in the department of Microbiology, University of Ibadan, was terminated on June 14, 2016 after being found guilty of allegation of insubordination and flagrant disregard for constituted authority by Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC).
According to Dr. Ogunshe as reported on September 1, 2016, by Tijani Oluwamayowa, of TheCable- an online newspaper, the allegations levelled against her by the SSDC for opposing Dr A.A Onilude as Acting Head of Department (HOD) in 2006 when he was appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. O. A Bamiro was an unjust punishment.
“A Prof. A.I Sanni wanted to be HOD in 2006 but a senior lecturer; Dr. A. A Onilude mentored by him also wanted to be Acting HOD. There were serious reactions all over the campus when the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. O.A Bamiro appointed Dr. Onilude as Ag. HOD.” She further mentioned that according to regulations, a professor should be the Head of Department, while in the absence of a Professor, a Reader (Associate Professor)/ Senior Lecturer will be an Acting HOD, and a Lecturer 1 can only be a Coordinator.
Dr. Ogunshe said when ASUU in its emergency sitting urged Prof. Bamiro to reconsider the appointment and he refused, the case was forwarded to the senate and that she was one of those who wrote and reacted to the controversial appointment. She said further that in 2006, she was asked to move from her office to another on the basis that a resident technologist was to stay in that office which she objected to and “since then (2006), till date I had gone through hell on the University of Ibadan Campus”
In her reaction to the termination letter, Dr. Ogunshe said she was not tried for the allegations contained in the letter else, she would have responded and that it was deliberate that she was not given any notice for trial.
However, the immediate past VC, Prof. Isaac Adewole also wrote a petition against her to National Universities Commission (NUC) on allegations of collecting bribe from students and refusal to move from a preparatory room in final year laboratory.
Mr Tunji Oladejo, Director of Public Communications; University of Ibadan said that her appointment was not terminated for refusal to vacate her office and demanded to see the documents that stated otherwise when he was contacted by Cable lifestyle.
