Barrister Abdur- Raheem Adebayo Shittu, the honourable Minister of Communications has advised the Federal Government to diversify the economy by leveraging on Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
Barrister Shittu said this while delivering a keynote address on “Maximizing the Potentials of the Telecommunications Industry for Reversing Recession and the Economic Growth of Nigeria” at the University of Ibadan School of Business (UISB’S) eminent person business lecture series on Saturday, 18 March, 2017.
He said, “Diversification of Nigeria’s economy into various sectors is not enough to take the country out of recession, until the process is done by leveraging on ICT in an effective and efficient manner”.
According to him, the vision would be driven by a Government Strategy that aims to deliver government modernization; greater value for citizens and businesses; transparency and open government, among others.
The minister who claimed that the Nigerian telecom industry is one of the fastest growing in the world revealed that it is projected to become the second largest telecom market globally by 2018.
Shittu who said for Nigeria to wriggle out of the current economic downturn needed to digitize told those present that his ministry in collaboration with the office of the Vice-President to establish eight innovative hubs in Nigeria.
These hubs according to him would share innovative digital and collaborative technology from some development partners.
