 Prof. A.B Odaibo of the Department of Zoology has said that most of the parasitic diseases are found among the poor.

He said this while delivering an inaugural lecture on, “Parasites of Poverty and Poverty of Parasitism” on behalf of the faculty of Science, University of Ibadan at Trenchard Hall recently.

Prof. Odaibo stated that parasites that are epidemic and highly prevalent among the poorest in the country. 
He claimed that the diseases are associated with negative effects in the course and outcome of pregnancy, delayed physical and intellectual development during childhood, poor school attendance and reduced working productivity.

Prof. Odaibo recommended that poverty reduction strategies should among other things focus on the basic health problems of the poor people. 

He also advised that efforts should be made to create and disseminate information on preventive and health promoting behaviours.
