RESULT OF HARDWORK: OBJECTIVE CURRICULUM VITAE

OBJ + COMRADE + VAL – 17 = OJO ADEREMI

“What a heavy burden is a name that has become too famous” –Voltaire

April 29, 2017 marked the day Uites decided the leadership and new occupants of the KUNLE ADEPEJU BUILDING for the next one year. The president-elect’s name has become a household name in UI. It is not an understatement that the popularity of Ojo Aderemi played in no small part to his triumph. Everywhere in UI was and is still being littered, filtered and painted with the name.

President Buhari’s victory came just like yours in a number of ways besides the figures ratio. He won all of SOUTH WEST besides EKITI, his academic qualification was questioned and controversial, he was popularly elected to eradicate the mess of the GEJ led administration; the messianic expectations were very high, although now they are cascading down and crumbling fast and furiously. It is only an unconscious being that will argue against this. Even a subconscious observer knows the heat is up against Buhari as the same set of people who got him there want him out, even Katsina (his homeland) is clamouring for his resignation.

Albert Camus too in endorsement of your emergence added stringently and cautiously that “a promise must never be broken”. What made Uites vote for you was the force behind your name, the promise of an independent and strong Union that will be capable of standing head tall with the school management. Uites are very much aware of the problems at hand, the mess left behind and the excreta left to be excavated and so you were not brought to power to lament, cry or itemise the problems at hand for them again and thus they don’t  need a REMINDER. They decided against the LUXURIOUS life of  WiFi access et al promised by OBJ, the seemingly unfeasible promise of LEGAL experts to help us in the struggle by VAL, and the concept of SOLIDARIZING uites in championing freedom from oppression  by COMRADE, but opted for the PATRIOTIC & INTELLIGENT “suppression of oppression” agenda you proposed.

However, this is not to say this programmes by your competitors are not needed. Verily, you need to harness their knowledge to deliver a better, if not the best union Uites deserve. WiFi access and the eradication of manual course registration (by Comrade) are fantastic programmes among many others which will greatly benefit Uites. Of course, your primary objective is a very arduous one – fight with the management where welfare of students is concerned but then, that is expected of a true Union leader. While you face this, innovative programmes, which break the norm, are also welcome to make the life of free Uites better. This you can achieve by employing able hands with the ideology to make up the committee and see to executing the project, whatsoever it may be. Uites are ready to help, up there for the calling; just snap and they will be there to support the mandate given to you, to ensure its success.

THE PATRIOTIC INTELLIGENTSIA should also bear in mind the writing on the wall of Calvin Coolidge which reads that,

“heroism is not only in the man, but in the occasion”.

You are patriotically intelligent and intelligently patriotic as self- acclaimed but this is where how effective and how true the claim is will be tested. Use your ideas and that of others maximally, don’t turn into the helpless crybaby Buhari and his cohorts, but rather act accordingly and instill in other members of the executives the idea, so as to spread virulently the virus of Patriotic Intelligentsia among Uites. The Vice president claims she is your neck, weak and fragile to me; mould that neck patriotically and intelligently to suit the purpose before placing your head on her neck. Also, maximise positively (something Nifemi failed to do according to Comrade), your usage of the 7TH ASSEMBLY SRC and give us the best…

HAVING TROUBLE CATCHING UP IN SCHOOL? THESE 5 TIPS WILL HELP…

In a matter of weeks the graveyard silence in KDL will turn to a beehive. Then everyone will be forced to put on the serious mood, booking permanent seats,  beds and mats, deceiving no one but themselves. Well, as the saying goes, ’He who fails to plan has already planned to fail. So before that time comes, heed these salient warnings.

OJO ADEREMI EMERGES UISU PRESIDENT ELECT WITH OVER 2600 VOTES

In a landslide victory, Ojo Aderemi has emerged winner in the just concluded 2017 University of Ibadan Students’ Union Presidential race

The Convener of Patriotic Intelligentsia led each of the three opponents with at least 1600 votes ahead of his closest opponent, Ogeleyinbo Bodunrin Joseph aka OBJ who amassed only about 1000 votes. Abass Hamzat Ayodeji aka Comrade follows Aderemi and OBJ with about 829 votes while Igbonekwu Valentine AKA Valentinus  gathered about 811 votes.

CPS HOLDS BY-ELECTION, OJUOLAPE SECURES TWO-THIRDS VOTES

The Council of Presidents and Secretaries (CPS), Faculty of Arts, has just concluded the by-election for the office of the Social Director.

The only candidate, Ojuolape Jude Halleluyah, a 400 level student of Communication and Language Arts secured 2/3 of the 212 votes.

INTERVIEW: 4-POINT GRADING SYSTEM WAS A DIRECTIVE FROM THE NUC- SUB-DEAN, FACULTY OF ARTS

It has been observed that there have been changes in the curriculum of most departments in the Faculty. Such changes include renaming of courses, change of course codes, addition of new courses and most importantly the change from 7.0 grading system to 4.0 grading system. Freshers and returning students alike, have been agitated by the change. It is in view of this that an AFAS PRESS (AP) correspondent, Tope Lanre Bello, engages the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Adams Olufemi Akewula. Excerpts below as transcribed by Lillian Njoku:

Dr Akewula

SUB DEAN: I am Dr. Adams Olufemi Akewula, the Sub Dean, General, Faculty of Arts.

AP: What is the implication of the change in curriculum for the fresh students?

SUB DEAN: The change in curriculum is meant to add to knowledge, that is, the existing body of knowledge that we have. The second aspect of it is that it will also enhance the value of our academic portions. It is not all the departments that have changed their curriculum but few departments in the faculty have changed theirs and the total units that the students will be asked to take for a particular session is now 40 starting from this 16/17 academic session. At the same time, the University of Ibadan, not only University of Ibadan though, N.U.C regulation is that all Nigerian universities should be using 4-point grading system. The 4-point grade ranges from 70-100, 3 point is from 60-69, 2 point is from 50-59, 1 point is from 45-49 and zero is from 40-44. So if any candidate scores less than 45, such a candidate has scored zero.

AP: What is the implication for the returning students?

SUB DEAN: The implication for the returning students is that they will still maintain the 7 points grading system. But for the 200 level students, the continuous assessment still remains 40.

AP: There is a change in curriculum but students of the faculty have not been given new prospectus to that effect. What can you say on that?

SUB DEAN: I understand but it depends on each department. For example in Arabic and Islamic Studies Department, what I did was to give orientation to all the 100 level students becaus

BEAUTY AND BRAINS: MEET UNIBADAN STUDENT AND C.E.O, TIRZAH CRAFTS, ADEYEMI ESTHER

It was a swell time talking with a fellow Afasite, Adeyemi Esther as she shared interesting bits of experiences, career and many more with AFAS PRESS. The rising star team presents this beautiful, vivacious fashionista to you all. She is not just a pretty face in the crowd but a bundle of talent and inexhaustible energy. Sit back and enjoy as we unveil and unfurl our rising star this week.
Who is Adeyemi Esther?

I am a 400 level student at the Department of Communication and Language Arts. I’m the 5th of 6 children; the last girl although I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters. I attended Praise Nur/Pry School, Akinyemi, Ring-Road, Ibadan. High school was in FGGC Ipetumodu. I grew up in Ibadan, Ring Road to be precise. My childhood was fun because I had enough siblings to play with. I was pretty much everyone’s favorite. Well, my parents are Mr. and Mrs. Adeyemi. They are both self employed. I enjoy writing, crafting and sleeping. I dance sometimes,. I’m a Bible believing Christian.

What is your relationship with your parents like?
Hmmmmm. I can’t really say it was all fabulous. I mean sometimes we disagree about issues and all that. Plus I was more of Daddy’s girl. We have a pretty cool relationship. We talk about a lot of things.

So tell us, what do you do?
I own a start up. It’s named Tirzah which simply means “Beloved” in Hebrew. It’s basically a crafts business. I’m into making accessories for both sexes.

Accessories such as bracelets, lockets, chokers, anklets, bedazzled phone cases, Lapels, brooches, designed earpieces, earrings. Basically, my room is my work zone. I’ve been a fan of doing stuff for myself and my circle since I was young, right from primary school. But I decided to come out officially on the 1st of this month (March) this year.

How has it been with the business, what challenges do you encounter? Do you think it’s your calling?

It’s been going on well. I believe it’s one step at a time. I enjoy crafting; that’s the honest truth. I’m not sure there’s any start up that doesn’t have its challenges but every challenge/obstacle is a stepping stone.

UISU ’17: BEWARE OF THOSE PROMISES

The Students Union election is fast approaching and every candidate is trying to outdo the other with laudable promises and each candidate has turned into a good Samaritan for the sake of the election. One of the candidates was complaining about students becoming aware of their tactics as he was chided by a 200 level student, when he tried to be her messiah on a long queue. The young lady apparently was aware of the way campus politicians behave when they are canvassing for support. Older and more cynical voters have probably built up enough defence mechanism so as to avoid impending

WE HAVE FORGOTTEN TO REMEMBER THEM

It has been three years. 1098 days since terror struck Chibok; 26,280 hours since scores of young girls seeking the freedom education guaranteed were taken captive.

There was confusion and everyone had run helter-skelter to no other fruition than eventually dying in pieces. While many had been killed by the evil-hearted people laying claim to being on the side of light, they had gone on

EDITORIAL: EDUCATION IN NIGERIA :WHERE DID WE GO WRONG

These days, we see children who should be in school roaming the streets; many of them have taken to hawking on the streets and some of them have even become veterans in the act of begging. Unemployable and unskillful graduates are as common as pure water; students are left to occupy buildings that are not conducive for learning.

I WILL COMMIT SUICIDE IF…       by Mojoyinola Ajibola

Now, a student of University of Ibadan, Department of Veterinary Medicine who emerged as the best graduating student for 2015/16 academic session, Adebayo Kolawole was given a token of 50000 naira, with all his efforts: MTN (morning till night) and even TDB (till day break) reading; adopting six years of crusade in the church, department’s run of the mill, but, was appreciated with money that cannot buy IPhone not to talk of SUV.  What an Irony!

Several competitions do hold in the University of Ibadan where student brings to view their creativity, the likes of Jaw War,  an avenue for the public speaker to unfurl their speaking prowess, the just concluded Jar War winner was given a mini-laptop, after three long months of verbal exhibition and jawjaw wrestling. However, BBNaija appreciates her members with something that is superexcellent, albeit, with little stress, even with no stress. And Etisalat, MTN and lots will present millions of naira to anyone who wins their competition. This is a great slap to education. In fact, education is the key to success.
